About this region
About the Region
Ulleungdo is a volcanic island standing alone in the middle of the East Sea. As the ferry approaches, steep cliffs and rocky ridges appear to fall directly into the water. The sea deepens to a shade rarely seen along the mainland coast, and the entire island feels like a remote outpost set apart among wind and waves.
Its appeal lies less in convenience than in the clarity of the experience. In good weather, the water opens up cold and transparent; when conditions turn rough, plans can change in an instant. Ulleungdo is best approached not as a quick stop, but as a dedicated dive trip with enough time to settle into the rhythm of the island.
Diving Information
Briefings here begin with wind direction and current. Even an excellent site may be inaccessible when surface conditions are wrong, and the same site can require a completely different plan when the current shifts. Keep the team close from the moment you enter the water, then continue checking both the guide and key terrain features after descent.
Underwater, wave-cut cliffs and massive rock formations define the landscape. On the right day, visibility opens far into the depths, and drifting along the walls reveals the scale that makes Ulleungdo distinctive. Marine life is rewarding, but the heart of the experience is the deep blue water, rugged terrain, cold-water atmosphere, and tension created by waves and current.
There are days suitable for beginners, but divers who are comfortable waiting at the surface, entering and exiting from a boat, and moving as a team in current will enjoy the island most. Cold water can drain energy quickly, so generous thermal protection and surface intervals are essential.
